The journey
In the earlier half of the 1950s, in a gathering in Mysore's Sharada Vilas colledge, the leading Kannada stalwarts of the day Prof. S. V. Ranganna and Prof. H.M. Shankaranarayana Rao, listening to the mellifluous voice of S. Somasundaram, a student of the college, advised him to use his melodious, god-given voice in the rich Kannada music genres of Bhaavageethe and Jaanapada sangeetha (Folk music). Somasundaram, who heeded their advice started singing Kannada Bhavageethe including Dr. D. R. Bendre's Gangaavatarana and many more thereby enthralling music lovers everywhere. In 1957, he came to Bangalore to further his professional interests and founded Gaanasudha in the presence of Sri. Aa. Na. Krishna Rao and Sri M. Ramamurthy, who were responsible for revival of Kannada in those days and the father of Kannada Sugama Sangeetha, Sri. P. Kalinga Rao. Gradually Gaanasudha grew into a Sugama Sangeetha Academy.
What does Gaanasudha mean?
Derived from Samskrita, the language of the gods, Gaana means Music and Sudha means Nectar or Amrutha. Gaanasudha thus means the 'Nectar of music.'
